50th Reunion Celebration

This year is the 50th anniversary of George McGovern’s campaign for the presidency of the United States. July 19 was also his 100th birthday. Like tens of thousands of other Americans, we devoted part of our lives to that campaign and its effort to make the world a more peaceful and better place. It had an indelible impact on us. We are celebrating that commitment and its ongoing manifestations with this website and some events and hope you will join in.

On July 12, we held a virtual celebration of the 50th anniversary of George McGovern receiving the Democratic nomination for President, and of his 100th birthday. The celebration combined a planned program with special guests and remembrances with four sets of breakout rooms to say hello to old friends and make new ones in small groups. More than 125 McGovernites participated. We wanted to share our evening with you.

You can watch the entire planned program by clicking on the YouTube link here. We think it will lift your spirits, and reinforce our continuing commitment to peace and justice.

The McGovern Center at Dakota Wesleyan University is the living legacy of Sen. George and Eleanor McGovern, two of Dakota Wesleyan’s most prominent alumni. It has announced a daylong program on September 22 in Mitchell, South Dakota, with a campaign staff reunion the night before. See the McGovern Center page of this website for details.
