Dick Sklar and Gary Hart greet Sen. McGovern in San Francisco, June 3, 1972

Dick Sklar

(1934-2009)

Dick Sklar on the floor of the 1972 Democratic National Convention

Dick was a larger-than-life figure. By his late 30s he was a highly successful engineer and manufacturing executive in Cleveland. He owned Allied Steel and Tractor Corporation. The McGovern campaign was the turning point in his life as he committed the rest of his years primarily to public service. He cut his teeth managing Cuyahoga County in the Ohio primary which McGovern came oh so close to winning. Then he went on the road with the traveling field army and ran San Francisco in the California primary. He was the Ohio campaign manager in the general election where I worked directly for him for three months. But he had fallen in love with California where he moved with his family a few years later..
Dick was tough, abrasive, committed, and very very effective.
He lived just long enough to see Barack Obama inaugurated President.
