About 2 years before the California primary, Joe taught me how to unscrew the bottom of a pay phone, attach alligator clips to the line, and send sound clips from a tape recorder to radio stations in Northern California.
Senator McGovern would come to the state on weekends, Sunday was a “slow news” day, and so due to Joe’s guidance, starting well over a year before the California primary, our campaign made a huge impact, with quotes from McGovern on the radio perhaps every hour on multiple stations on Sundays.
